About B&D: 80 years of Australian ingenuity

From a steel-fabrication business started by two young Australians to the original Roll-A-Door and today’s connected garage, our story is one of practical ideas that make everyday life easier.

From a garage workshop to an Australian original

Our story began in 1946 with Arthur Byrne and Paul Davidson. The two young founders started a steel-fabrication business in a relative’s garage, working with a welder, a grinder and an oxy set. They went on to build their own factory and take on engineering work around Australia. Their initials became our name.

Then came an idea that changed the direction of the business. In 1955, inventor Ben Saul approached Byrne and Davidson with a rolling garage-door concept: metal sheets that could roll and unroll without cracking. Together, they developed a new way to open up the garage.

We introduced the B&D Roll-A-Door at the Sydney Home Show in 1956. The first 70 doors sold within two months. A familiar part of the Australian streetscape was on its way.

For us, the work didn’t stop when a door was sold. Arthur Byrne visited early customers to make adjustments and see how their doors performed. That attention to everyday use helped shape our approach to research and development: keep looking for ways to make a door easier to use, quieter to operate and more reassuring to come home to.

Choosing a B&D door is the beginning of the relationship. We provide owner manuals, warranty information and access to servicing and repairs through our support network.

Our Total Confidence Warranty is available on eligible door-and-opener combinations under the applicable terms. Cover differs between doors, openers, accessories and complete systems, and conditions can include registration and professional servicing. Your product’s warranty document sets out the period, any cycle limit and the care requirements; one headline warranty does not apply to every B&D product.
