The environmental impact of garage door materials

Choosing a garage door means thinking about more than the finish. The material, care it needs and what happens when it is replaced all matter. We’ll help you compare the practical options for your home and ask the right questions before you order.

Start with the actual material

A finish name describes the look, but it does not necessarily describe what the door is made from. If you like a timber appearance, ask about the base material and coating as well as the colour. Our timber-look options let you explore that appearance on compatible door constructions.

Solid timber and timber-look metal doors have different care requirements. Choose the material and finish with your site, preferred appearance and maintenance needs in mind. Check the exact product specification rather than treating every timber or metal door as equivalent.

Think about durability and care together

Our range includes steel roller and sectional doors with model-specific profiles and finish choices. A suitable specification, correct installation and ongoing care help you get the best from the system you choose.

Tell your dealer about the garage’s exposure and any assessed project requirements. Ask for the finish name and care instructions in your documentation. Follow the selected model’s cleaning and maintenance directions; do not use a general lubrication instruction for every door, track or accessory.

Compare roller doors, sectional doors and designer finishes to understand the available constructions and combinations.

Ask about removal and recycling

Metal can be recycled, but an installed garage door is a complete assembly with different components. Before replacing your door, ask the dealer how removal and disposal will be handled, which materials can be recovered through their local arrangements and whether that work is included in your quote.

Have a trained installer remove the old door. Springs, cables and other tensioned components are not a do-it-yourself dismantling job. A recycling claim about the material does not establish that every component of a particular installation will be recovered.

Consider compatible insulation and seals

If the garage is attached to your home or used for more than parking, discuss compatible insulation and seals before choosing your door. The available options depend on the door model and configuration. Ask for the documented product performance, installation requirements and whether the option must be specified when ordering.

A quoted panel rating does not measure the energy use of your whole home. The rest of the garage, its openings, construction and how you use it also affect the result. We do not promise a particular bill saving or carbon reduction from choosing a door option.

Explore our insulation and seal options and have the exact combination confirmed with your dealer.
