Seven features to consider for a safer, more secure garage

Your garage may hold your car, tools, bikes and a doorway into your home. We design our doors, openers and accessories to work together, so you can choose security and everyday convenience as one complete system. Here are seven features to discuss with us when planning your door.

1. A locking system matched to the door

A closed garage door is not necessarily physically locked. Our AUTO LOCK adds an automatic bolt to compatible B&D sectional doors. It is standard with Panelift Icon and included in the current compatible Smart Pro package; other doors and openers need their available options checked.

For a new roller door, Roll-A-Door Secure combines Dual AUTO LOCK, reinforced security guides, a security bottom rail and a B&D-specified opener. It must be installed as a complete system. Its components cannot be retrofitted to turn an ordinary roller door into Secure.

Our published AUTO LOCK lifting-resistance claim is up to 450 kg at the lock point. It describes a specified locking arrangement, not a guarantee against every form of forced entry. We’ll confirm the locking system on your quote.

2. Automatic Reverse and model-specific Backdrive

Automatic Reverse stops and reverses a closing door when the configured obstruction threshold is reached. Automatic Backdrive responds to detected forced opening on models equipped with it. Neither is a reason to test a moving door with your body or to assume a physical lock is fitted.

At handover, ask our installer to demonstrate the safe checks in your model’s instructions. Stop using a door that fails a safety check and arrange a repair; do not increase force settings to overcome a fault.

3. Safety Beams

Our opener instructions require photoelectric beams where closing force at the bottom edge exceeds 400 N (40 kg), and for the specified smart operation outside the user’s line of sight. Your installer must assess the actual force and control method for your model. Door weight and closing force are different measurements. Safety Beams do not replace safe use, and built-in Automatic Reverse does not replace the required beams. Keep people, pets and vehicles clear of the moving door.

Beams detect an interruption across their installed path. Correct positioning, alignment and maintenance matter. We’ll identify the compatible beam set and whether it is included or an added component.

4. Compatible remotes and keypad access

Our compatible Tri-Tran+ controls use rolling-code technology to help resist code grabbing. Older remotes can use different technology, so a B&D badge alone does not establish compatibility. Keep remotes with your keys, protect keypad PINs and review access when household arrangements change.

If a remote is lost or stolen, secure access and follow the model-specific erase and reprogramming procedure. Buying another remote does not remove the missing one from the opener’s memory. Our owner guides cover supported models.

5. Smartphone control

The Smartphone Control Kit and compatible built-in Smart Hubs let you manage access through the B&D App, check door status and receive supported notifications. Suitable connectivity, a compatible phone and the specified safety equipment are required.

Door position and physical locking are different things. Have us demonstrate the status indications and actual lock operation on your setup, including what happens after manual release. Protect your account and review who has access.

6. Battery Backup

A compatible Battery Backup provides limited powered operation when mains power fails and recharges when power returns. We quote approximately two to four open-and-close cycles; available operation depends on battery condition and the installation. Confirm compatibility and included equipment rather than assuming every opener has backup power.

7. An emergency access arrangement

If the garage has no other entrance, discuss the correct external emergency access device before installation. An internal release cord cannot be reached from outside a locked garage. Your installer should demonstrate the exact release, securing and re-engagement procedure, including any separate lock.

Disengaging the opener removes its holding function. Never release an open, unsupported, damaged or unbalanced door; it can fall. If the door is stuck or unsafe, keep people clear and arrange a repair.

Good security continues beyond the garage door

Lock your car and the internal door into your home. Keep keys and remotes out of unattended vehicles, change shared PINs when needed and remove app users who no longer require access. These simple habits support the equipment you choose.

Plan the whole system with us

Tell us how you use the garage, who needs access and what should happen during a power outage. We’ll confirm the door, opener, lock, beams and controls together, with the applicable warranty conditions in your quote.
