Troubleshoot a garage door that will not open
Garage door won’t open? Let’s start with a few owner checks to help you work out what’s happening. We’ll look at the controls, power, drive connection and any separate lock. Leave spring adjustments and motor settings to a trained technician.

Check for damage before trying controls
Stop if the door is damaged, crooked, unusually heavy or has a broken spring or cable. Keep people and vehicles clear and arrange a repair. Do not release an open or unsupported door, pull it back onto its tracks or adjust springs, cables or opener force settings.
Compare the controls you already have
| What happens | What it can help identify | Next safe step |
|---|---|---|
| One remote fails; another known-working control operates the door | A transmitter battery, compatibility or coding issue | Check that remote’s specified battery and coding, rather than resetting the whole system. |
| Every control fails and the opener has no normal power indication | A power or opener issue | Check the accessible plug and switch from a safe position. Stop if there is damage, water or repeated electrical tripping; arrange qualified help. |
| Motor or drive runs but the door remains still | A disengaged mechanism or mechanical fault | Use the matching re-engagement guide only if the door is sound. If it does not reconnect, stop. |
| Opener signals a lock or beam warning | An accessory condition | Read the exact-model indicator and accessory guide. Do not force the door or bypass the device. |
| Door is uneven, off its guides or unusually heavy | A mechanical problem | Keep it out of use and arrange a repair. |
Check the model-specific causes
On Secure SDO-6V3, Smart SDO-7V3 and Smart Pro SDO-9V3, an uncoded transmitter or Vacation Mode can also prevent operation. Check an intentionally enabled Vacation Mode using section 15 of your manual. Leave stored controls and travel limits unchanged while diagnosing the symptom.
On Power Drive RDO-1V4 and Roll-A-Pro RDO-1V3, CODE SET indicates radio/control activity, while OPEN/CLOSE lights show travel. Receiving a radio signal does not establish that the mechanism or lock is safe to move.
Identify a beep or flash pattern before deciding it is a flat battery or service reminder.
If there is a power cut
A compatible charged backup battery may allow limited operation. Otherwise manual operation is an option only for a sound door, after identifying the correct release and any separate lock. A door stuck partly open or showing damage needs professional assessment before release.

Replacing a remote battery
The pictured transmitter in the linked quick guides uses one CR2032 battery; other remotes may differ. Check the exact remote, follow the guide, secure its battery compartment and keep new and used button batteries away from children. If a battery may have been swallowed or inserted into the body, seek immediate medical assistance.
Prepare for the repair enquiry
- Door and opener model/version and whether there is AUTO LOCK or battery backup.
- Which controls work, which light flashes and the exact pattern.
- Whether the motor/drive moves and whether the door is closed, open or partly open.
- Any impact, recent power outage, unusual sound or visible damage.
- Whether the garage has another entrance and whether the property can be secured.
If the controls, indicators or release mechanism differ from this guide, stop and find your model’s manual or call us on 13 62 63. Have the opener model/version, remote or accessory model and the symptom ready. For damage or repeated faults, arrange a repair.
