Garage-door care, maintenance and repair

A little care goes a long way towards keeping your garage door in good shape. We’ll help you clean it correctly, recognise changes in the way it works and know when to call a technician. Use the care instructions for your finish and mechanism, and leave adjustments to load-bearing parts to a professional.

Routine care you can plan

Owner checkPractical boundary
Door surfaceClean as directed by the door handbook. Coastal, industrial and sheltered exposure can need more frequent attention.
Visible guides/tracks and beam pathKeep accessible areas free of dirt and obstructions; do not alter brackets or alignment to bypass a fault.
Remote controlsUse the specified replacement battery and coding instructions. Keep controls out of children’s reach.
OperationObserve unusual noise, uneven movement or a changing gap from a safe position; arrange assessment if behaviour changes.
Manual release and safety testsLearn the exact model’s procedure while the equipment is in sound condition. Follow its precautions and testing schedule.

Do not apply grease or oil indiscriminately to tracks, locks, running strips or sensors. Lubrication depends on the door construction and handbook. Spring tension, cable work, track adjustment and opener force/travel setup belong with a trained technician.

Cleaning and exposure

Follow the cleaning method for the actual door finish and owner handbook. Our maintenance page recommends washing the exterior with clean water and a soft cloth or brush every 14 days, more often in coastal conditions. Sheltered areas can need attention because rain does not wash away deposits.

Keep water away from electrical equipment, and choose cleaning products for the particular finish or component. A solvent or lubricant suited to one part may damage paint, plastic strips or sensors elsewhere. Unsure what to use? Give us the model and finish and we’ll help you check.

When routine care becomes a repair

ObservationNext step
Uneven travel, sagging, damaged panel or loose supporting hardwareStop using the door and arrange professional assessment.
A broken spring/cable or a door that may fallKeep the opening clear; do not release the opener or attempt to lift the door.
A repeated beam or lock warningCheck the guide for that model and arrange help if the simple permitted checks do not resolve it.
A remote that works intermittentlyCheck the specified battery and guide; radio range alone does not establish a motor fault.
New grinding or scrapingDescribe where it occurs; do not raise force settings to drive through the problem.

Work for a trained technician

Spring tension, lifting cables, door balance, brackets, tracks and opener travel/force settings affect the safe operation of the complete installation. Leave adjustments and repairs to a trained technician. Repeatedly operating a faulty door can cause further damage.

Mounting points and fixingsCheck the door, guides/tracks and supporting connections.
Springs and lifting componentsAssess condition and make appropriate professional adjustments.
Opener travel and force settingsCheck operation against the model and installation requirements.
Appropriate lubricationApply the products and method required for the actual mechanism.

Allow around 30 minutes for a standard service. Fault-finding, worn parts or other issues may take longer and need a separate repair quote.

Service timing and records

Arrange the first recommended service within 12 months of installation and subsequent servicing in line with the product instructions and use. The general Total Confidence terms require a B&D Representative service within 12 months and every two years thereafter. Keep dated records and act earlier if symptoms appear.

Use the correct instructions

Find owner manuals for the model/version on the opener label. The quick guide covers everyday operation; the product/installation manual provides detailed technical information for installers. If the label or mechanism does not match the guide, stop and ask us to identify it.

If the door is damaged, crooked, off its tracks, has a broken spring or cable, or may fall, stop using it and keep people away from the opening. Do not force the door, adjust springs or cables, or disconnect an unsupported door from its opener. Arrange a trained technician.
