Five ways to care for your garage door through the year

1. Keep the finish clean in the right way
Identify whether your door has a painted steel, wrapped timber-look, clad or other surface. Use the cleaning method specified for that finish and exposure. Avoid abrasive tools or unapproved products, and keep water away from the opener and electrical components. A coastal or heavily exposed location may need more attention than a sheltered opening.
2. Notice changes before trying a remedy
Look from a safe position for damage, corrosion, displaced hardware or a seal pulling away. Take note of new noise or uneven movement. Do not loosen brackets, touch lifting cables or test a suspect spring. If operation changes or damage is present, stop use and ask for an assessment.
3. Use component-specific maintenance
There is no single lubricant for every part of every door. For example, the Power Drive/Roll-A-Pro shared manual excludes WD-40, RP-7 and petroleum grease in guides. Other door and opener components have their own requirements. Follow the matching care guidance; spring, balance and opener adjustment remain technician work.
4. Plan professional servicing and keep records
Our general guidance recommends a B&D Representative service within 12 months after installation and every two years thereafter. Check the actual product terms and consider operating frequency, exposure and symptoms. A fault should be addressed sooner. Keep service reports and receipts with the warranty document rather than relying on a calendar reminder alone.
5. Check the opening after a change
After an impact, building work or severe weather, look for visible damage without operating a suspect door. If the floor, drainage or surrounding structure has changed, have the installation assessed. Adding cladding, insulation, seals or a different opener can affect weight, clearance or operation and should be checked for compatibility.
Make your next service easier
Have the door and opener model/version, installation date and any symptom ready. Tell the provider about fitted locks, beams, battery backup or app control. Arrange routine servicing for a sound door, or book a repair assessment for damage or a fault. Confirm the visit scope and charges before booking.
