What to do when your garage door gets noisier
A change in your garage door’s sound is worth noticing. Some motor and movement noise is normal, but new scraping, grinding or shuddering can point to a fault. We’ll help you separate simple owner care from work that needs a technician.
Notice when the sound happens
Does the noise occur as the door starts, while it travels or when it reaches the floor? Does it come from the opener, curtain, panels or tracks? Record what you can observe safely and whether movement has changed. Do not repeatedly operate a struggling door just to capture a recording.
Stop for damage or uneven movement
If the door is crooked, heavy, off its tracks, visibly damaged or has a broken spring or cable, stop using it. Keep people and vehicles away and arrange a repair. A noisy door should not be forced closed or manually released when it is unsupported or unsafe.
Clean only the parts your guide permits
Use the instructions for the actual door finish and mechanism. Dirt on a surface is different from a mechanical fault in a hinge, bearing or guide. Keep water and cleaning products away from electrical equipment. Our maintenance guidance helps you find the right owner task without turning cleaning into adjustment work.
Do not lubricate every part with one product
The RDO-1V4 Power Drive and RDO-1V3 Roll-A-Pro manual excludes WD-40, RP-7 and petroleum grease in the door guides. The SDO-6V3/7V3/9V3 manual gives its own guide-track cleaning instructions. Neither is a universal instruction to spray hinges, springs, tracks and drive components. Match the component and manual, or ask the technician to perform the maintenance.
Leave tightening and balance work to a technician
A rattle can involve mounting, worn parts or door movement. Loosening or tightening the wrong bracket can affect the support of the door. Spring adjustment, lifting cables, balance and opener force/travel settings need professional assessment. A more powerful opener is not a fix for an unbalanced door.
Choose the right next step
For a sound door due for maintenance, book a service. For new grinding, damage or repeated faults, arrange a repair. Insulation can affect sound transmission through an eligible door assembly, but it does not repair mechanical noise or justify adding weight to an existing door.
