What to do if your roller door is ballooning

If your roller-door curtain bulges or bunches instead of travelling normally, stop operating it. We call this visible behaviour ballooning, but the cause needs to be assessed at the door. Repeated operation or pulling on the curtain can make damage worse.

Keep the opening clear

Move people and vehicles away from the door’s path and do not stand beneath a distorted curtain. Stop using the normal controls. If the door is partly open or unsupported, do not pull the manual-release handle, push it back into the guides or try to force it closed.

Record what you can see safely

Tell the repairer whether the problem occurred while opening or closing, whether the curtain appears to have left a guide, and whether there was an impact or unusual sound. Photograph the whole opening from a safe distance if possible. Do not cycle the door again simply to reproduce the symptom.

Let the technician identify the cause

Curtain condition, guide alignment, movement, balance and opener operation may all need assessment. A bulge does not prove that one particular part has failed or that the material has stretched. Do not adjust spring tension, bend guides, loosen brackets or change opener force settings as a trial fix.

Do not start with track cleaning on a damaged door

Removing ordinary loose debris can be part of permitted care for a sound door. A distorted or jammed curtain is different: the door may need to be secured before anyone works near the guides. Arrange a repair assessment rather than reaching into the mechanism or applying lubricant in the hope that it will free itself.

Ask for the repair options and scope

The technician can assess whether the curtain, guides or other components can be repaired and whether suitable parts are available. Replacement may be appropriate in some cases, but it should follow an assessment. Confirm the proposed work, charges and any temporary access or security arrangements before proceeding.

Choose the right enquiry

Use our repair enquiry and share the door/opener model, suburb, door position and visible symptoms. For urgent assistance, use the emergency repair directory and confirm availability and after-hours charges with the provider. Routine servicing advice is useful after the fault is resolved; it is not a substitute for making a distorted door safe.
