What an insulated garage door can do for your space
If your garage is also a workshop or a place for hobbies, the door is worth considering as part of the room’s comfort. Our Insul-Shield option adds insulation to an eligible new sectional door. Here is what the construction and test figures tell you—and what else to consider.
What is inside Insul-Shield?
The construction shown in our brochure combines a steel outer skin, graphite EPS inner core and polypropylene backing sheet. The insulation is part of the specified door assembly, with reinforcing required for certain sizes and weights. Ask us to confirm the eligible door, dimensions, opener and complete construction when you order.
Understand the thermal figure
Our brochure gives the specified construction an R-value of 1.4. R-value describes resistance to heat flow; it is not a forecast of the temperature inside your garage. Walls, roof, ventilation, gaps, orientation and use of the room affect the result. We do not apply whole-home energy-saving percentages to a garage-door purchase.
Understand the acoustic figure
The brochure’s acoustic result is a measured R’w of 18 dB for the tested Panelift Insul-Shield door system with jamb and lintel seals, from the cited Acoustic Logic test dated 9 September 2014. Treat that as a result for that assembly. It does not mean every garage becomes 18 dB quieter or that the door eliminates music, traffic or mechanical operating noise.
Include the opening and the rest of the building
Seals, drainage and ventilation need to work with the door. A gap or water-entry problem may have a different cause from heat transfer through the panels. Insulation does not make the garage weatherproof, climate-controlled or suitable for storing every temperature-sensitive item. A proposed living-space conversion also needs a separate building assessment.
Specify it with your new door
Our Insul-Shield offering is for an eligible new sectional door, rather than a generic retrofit to any existing door. Do not attach panels or other weight to an existing door without an approved assessment of its balance and opener. If you are replacing a door, discuss insulation before the complete system is ordered.
