Using your sectional garage door safely
A sectional door moves on overhead tracks, with springs and lifting hardware helping balance its weight. A few clear household habits make everyday operation easier to manage. We’ll also help you recognise when a change needs a trained technician.
Watch the whole opening
Before operating the door, move people, pets and loose items away from its travel path. Wait until the door is fully open before driving through, and watch it finish closing before leaving. Keep tall items, vehicle racks and storage clear of the door and overhead tracks.
Protect fingers and keep controls out of play
Do not touch panel joints, hinges, tracks or lifting cables while the door moves. Show everyone in the household how to use the normal controls and keep remotes away from children. Use the intended handle for any permitted manual operation; do not grip panel edges or moving hardware.
Understand the safety equipment you have
Automatic Reverse belongs to the compatible opener and its commissioned setup; it is not an inherent feature of an unpowered door panel. Safety Beams protect their beam path in the specified configuration. Keep the beam path clear and follow the matching guide for owner checks. Never defeat a beam or increase force settings to overcome repeated reversal.
Look for a change, then act
From a safe position, look for crooked travel, frayed cables, displaced rollers, a damaged panel or new grinding. Stop operation if any of these appear. Do not pull a door back onto its tracks or tighten supporting brackets yourself. Record the symptom and model details for the repairer without repeatedly cycling the door.
Plan for a power cut before it happens
Find the instructions for your exact opener and any separate lock while everything is working normally. For Secure SDO-6V3, Smart SDO-7V3 and Smart Pro SDO-9V3, use our model-specific how-to library. Other rails and older openers can use different release mechanisms. Do not release an open, unsupported, damaged or unbalanced door.
Keep the right maintenance record
Under our general guidance, arrange a B&D Representative service within 12 months of installation and every two years thereafter; follow your actual product terms and operating needs. Heavy use or a fault can require attention sooner. Keep the invoice, model details and service reports with your owner manual, and arrange a repair when behaviour changes.
