How a garage door opener can support your home security

A well-chosen opener makes coming and going easier. It can also add useful security functions, from encrypted remote control to status alerts and compatible physical locking. We’ll help you understand what each feature does and match the complete system to your garage.

Our quote form opens on our main B&D website. For a fault, use the service or repair option in this guide; charges are confirmed separately.

Start with a sound door and the right opener

An opener relies on the door, guides, springs and fixings being in good condition. It cannot repair a damaged curtain or compensate for poor balance. We check the model, door area, weight, operating frequency and installation before recommending automation.

Automatic BackDrive and Automatic Reverse have different jobs. BackDrive responds to an attempt to force a closed door upward on supported systems. Automatic Reverse responds to a closing obstruction. Neither feature is a substitute for a compatible physical lock or the required Safety Beams.

Add a physical lock where compatible

Our sectional AUTO LOCK engages a bolt with the guide track when the compatible opener closes the door. It is standard with Panelift Icon and included in the current Smart Pro package, with optional installations available on other approved combinations.

For a roller door, Roll-A-Door Secure uses a separate complete system: dual locks, security guides, a reinforced bottom rail and a specified opener. A sectional AUTO LOCK is not a universal roller-door retrofit. We’ll check the door and opener versions before confirming an upgrade.

Use connected access thoughtfully

A compatible Smart Phone Control setup lets you check door status, operate the door and manage authorised users through the B&D App. Supported functions include activity history and operation or extended-open notifications. Availability depends on the hub, app, network and equipment.

Remote access needs working connectivity and correctly installed Safety Beams. Review users when someone moves out or no longer needs entry. Keep handheld remotes secure too: encrypted Tri-Tran+ communication helps reduce interference and unauthorised radio access, but it does not protect a remote left where someone can take it.

Auto-close is model-specific

Do not assume every opener closes automatically after the same delay. Power Drive RDO-1V4 has a documented auto-close mode requiring Safety Beams and interruption of the beam after opening; Roll-A-Pro RDO-1V3 does not have that function in the shared manual. Your installer should configure and demonstrate the approved mode for your equipment.

Beams detect interruption across their path. They do not detect every possible obstruction, and an automatic function is not a guarantee that the doorway will always be clear or secure.

Plan access during an outage

Compatible Battery Backup provides a limited reserve, depending on its charge, condition and the door load. It does not power the household router or guarantee uninterrupted app access. Learn the correct manual-release procedure for the door, opener and any lock, and plan external emergency access if there is no other entrance.

Ask us to itemise the opener, controls, lock, hub, beams, battery and installation in your quote. For an existing fault, book a service. Explore our security and smart options to compare the functions before choosing.
