Reduce heat transfer through your garage: insulation, seals and care

If your garage is uncomfortable in hot or cold weather, the door is one part of the picture. The roof, walls, gaps, ventilation and how long the doorway stays open all affect conditions. We’ll help you assess where a suitable insulated door or compatible seals may be useful, without promising a saving that depends on the whole building.

Our quote form opens on our main B&D website. For a fault, use the service or repair option in this guide; charges are confirmed separately.

Start by understanding the space

Think about whether the garage is detached or connected to living areas, how you use it and whether the surrounding construction is insulated. A regularly used workspace has different priorities from a ventilated parking area.

Do not block ventilation required for the building. If you plan to convert the garage to another use, get appropriate building advice; an insulated door alone does not make the space suitable for occupation.

Insulation slows heat transfer through the panel

Our Insul-Shield option combines a graphite-infused expanded polystyrene core with a polypropylene backing sheet behind the steel sectional panel. The stated R-value is 1.4 for the referenced construction.

It is ordered with an eligible new Panelift or Panelift Icon door. Current product guidance does not offer it as a retrofit. Nullarbor Smooth, window combinations and certain specialist constructions are excluded. We check the complete configuration, finished weight, springs and opener rather than attaching extra material to an existing door.

Seals address a different pathway

Appropriate bottom and perimeter seals can help reduce gaps and draughts. They do not turn the garage into an airtight or floodproof room, and they cannot correct a damaged or unbalanced door.

If a gap is new, have the cause checked before fitting a thicker strip. Floor slope, guide position or worn components can all be involved. A tested bushfire sealing system also has different requirements from a general brush or weatherseal.

Treat environmental claims carefully

Steel components may be recyclable through suitable local facilities, but a complete door can include coatings, plastics, insulation, electronics and batteries. Ask the installer about separating and disposing of those materials when the old equipment is removed. The recyclability of steel is not a guarantee that the entire door goes into a single recycling stream.

Choosing a door suited to its use, maintaining it and repairing appropriate components can help avoid premature replacement. That does not establish a particular lifecycle carbon saving or make every product “eco-friendly” in every application.

Compare the complete improvement

Ask what the proposed work changes: panel heat transfer, gaps, damaged parts or simply appearance. Compare an itemised quote with any other insulation or building work needed. There is no universal electricity-bill reduction, payback period or carbon result from changing a garage door alone.

Follow the model’s maintenance schedule and inspect accessible seals for wear. For a new door, bring photographs, usage details, preferred finishes and any building requirements to the quote. Explore Insul-Shield and seals or compare insulated and non-insulated doors to work through the choice.
