Quiet as can B&D: what helps a garage door run smoothly
When you leave early or arrive home late, smooth door operation matters. We design the curtain, running gear and compatible opener to work together. The right equipment and maintenance can reduce unnecessary noise, but a new scrape, rattle or bang is a reason to check the door rather than simply put up with it.
Our quote form opens on our main B&D website. For a fault, use the service or repair option in this guide; charges are confirmed separately.
Roller doors: reduce friction at the guides
Our Nylofelt running strips have been part of the Roll-A-Door story since 1968. Their woven nylon exterior and felt interior support smooth movement between the curtain and guides. The running strips are designed for greaseless operation; adding grease is not the answer to a noisy curtain.
Guides, stops, drum arrangements and the bottom weatherseal also need to be correctly fitted. A quiet result depends on the model, installation and condition, not a single material applied to every door.
Sectional doors: compare the running gear
Panelift and Panelift Icon have different hardware. Standard Panelift uses its specified bearing wheels and track arrangement. Icon includes twin-wheel Smoothtrack and its own standard springs, cables and other features.
Those distinctions can help you compare packages, but a finish does not add hardware from another model. A timber-look Panelift remains a Panelift configuration unless the quote specifies Icon. We check tracks, balance, fixings and opener selection with the complete door.
Openers can soften the movement
Soft start and stop reduce abrupt motion on supported openers such as Power Drive and the current sectional range. The operator still needs a correctly balanced door within its area, weight and installation limits.
Increasing force to overcome resistance is not a noise remedy. A door that suddenly becomes louder may have a guide, spring, cable, wheel or other fault. Have the cause assessed before it damages additional parts.
Separate operating noise from sound passing through the door
Insulation addresses sound and heat transfer through an eligible construction. It does not repair a noisy mechanism. Our Panelift Insul-Shield assembly with jamb and lintel seals achieved an 18 dB result in the referenced acoustic test; that is not a promise that every garage will be 18 dB quieter or that door movement will be silent.
Insul-Shield is specified with eligible new sectional doors, with finish and window restrictions. If you use the garage for hobbies or have rooms beside it, we can discuss the whole opening and other sound paths as part of your selection.
Respond to a change in sound
Notice when the noise occurs: starting, travelling, reaching the floor or turning at the curve. Record the sound from a safe position if useful. Keep people clear and stop use if there is uneven movement, visible damage, unusual heaviness or a sudden loud bang.
Follow the model’s cleaning and service instructions. Do not reach into moving tracks, adjust springs or apply lubricant indiscriminately. Book a service for an existing issue or compare our door range for a new installation. We’ll help you choose and maintain a setup suited to your home.
