How long should your B&D garage door last?
A garage door’s service life depends on the complete installation: the door you choose, how often you use it, its exposure and the care it receives. We have been developing our Roll-A-Door since 1956, and we design our current ranges for dependable everyday use. We cannot promise one lifespan for every door or property.
Our quote form opens on our main B&D website. For a fault, use the service or repair option in this guide; charges are confirmed separately.
Separate service life, design cycles and warranty
These figures answer different questions. Service life is how long the installed equipment remains suitable for use. A cycle rating describes a specified component or test arrangement. Warranty cover sets out the remedies, periods, conditions and exclusions for the purchased product.
For example, current Panelift springs have a 10,000-cycle design rating, while Panelift Icon’s standard springs are rated to 20,000 cycles. Standard Roll-A-Door springs are rated to 30,000 cycles. Those different specifications should not be replaced with a claim that every component lasts 30 years.
One cycle is one opening and closing. At five complete cycles a day, 30,000 cycles represents about 16.4 years of use mathematically. It is an illustration of usage, not a guaranteed door lifespan. Springs and other components may require servicing or replacement during the life of the door.
How you use the garage matters
A door opened morning and evening has a different workload from a shared entrance used repeatedly throughout the day. Tell us the expected daily cycles and busiest period before ordering. Commercial and shared-use applications need the right door, operator and warranty category; a residential motor is not approved for intensive use simply because it can move the door.
Listen for changes in operation. A new scrape, uneven movement, repeated reversal or a door that becomes heavy is a reason for assessment. Continuing to force a faulty door can damage other components.
Exposure changes the care your door needs
Salt, industrial fallout, moisture and sheltered areas can affect finishes and components. Tell us if the property is near a corrosive environment, including within one kilometre of the coast or an industrial source. Follow the owner handbook for washing and care, including areas that rain does not naturally wash.
A wind-rated door must be specified for the actual site, size, substrate and installation. The rating does not remove the need for inspection after damage or mean that automatic operation is unrestricted during severe weather.
Keep maintenance and warranty records
Follow the model’s checks and professional service schedule. Eligible Total Confidence packages require a B&D door and opener purchased together, installation by B&D or a B&D Representative, registration and the specified servicing. Time and cycle limits apply together, and components have separate terms. Flex-A-Door and Roll-A-Door Secure have their own warranty arrangements.
Keep your invoice, model details, installation information and service record. These help us identify the right parts and assess any warranty enquiry. A warranty is additional to applicable consumer rights; it is not a substitute for maintenance.
Repair or replace on condition
A serviceable door may only need an appropriate component repair. Widespread damage, recurring faults, unavailable parts or a change in your access needs may favour replacement. We’ll assess the equipment before recommending the next step. Arrange a service or compare repair and replacement.
