The benefits and limits of sectional-door insulation
If you use your garage for a workshop, exercise or hobbies, an insulated door may help make the space more comfortable. It is one part of the building, though: walls, roof, seals, ventilation and how often the door opens all affect the result. We can help you compare an appropriate factory-insulated door with the way you plan to use the garage.

What Insul-Shield adds to a suitable door
Our Insul-Shield construction combines a steel outer layer, graphite EPS inner core and polypropylene backing sheet. The inner core provides thermal resistance, while the backing gives the inside of the door a finished surface.
Our November 2025 sectional brochure lists an R-rating of 1.4. This is product information for the specified system, not a whole-home energy rating or a forecast of the temperature your garage will reach. The real outcome depends on the rest of the garage and the installation.
Comfort starts with limiting heat transfer
An insulating layer resists heat flow through the door. That can be useful when the door forms a large part of the garage enclosure, particularly if you spend time in the space. Gaps around the opening, an uninsulated roof or frequent opening can reduce the benefit.
We do not promise a particular reduction in your electricity bill, a carbon saving or a safe storage temperature for sensitive belongings. If heating, cooling or a conversion to habitable space is planned, assess the complete building and any applicable requirements with the relevant professionals.
Read the sound-performance figure in context
Our Insul-Shield brochure cites an Acoustic Logic test dated 9 September 2014. Its footnote identifies a measured R’w for a B&D Panelift Insul-Shield garage-door system with jamb and lintel seals; the published figure is18dB.
That test configuration matters. It is not a guarantee that every garage will become18dB quieter or that a room will be soundproof. The complete door, seals, surrounding structure and sound source affect what you hear. Ask us to confirm the configuration being supplied.
Check the profile before ordering
Insul-Shield is a factory option for suitable new sectional doors. Our current sectional brochure expressly excludes Nullarbor Smooth doors from insulation availability. Do not assume an existing door can take a retrofit kit or every profile can be insulated.
The completed door’s weight and dimensions must also suit the spring system and opener. Have the entire package specified together. The visible finish, windows and insulation need to be compatible choices rather than separate orders.
Questions to bring to a quote
- Is the selected model, profile and size available with factory insulation?
- Which perimeter seals are included, and how will floor variation be handled?
- Which test configuration supports the performance information?
- Does the opener suit the complete insulated door?
- What care and warranty terms apply to the door and components?
Bring details of how you use the garage and the rest of its construction. We can then explain what the door changes—and what needs separate attention.
